Our Mission

The Nigel Story

One day, on a rare trip out of the house, she wandered into Pier 1 Imports. There she noticed a small glass flying pig named Penelope. It was simple and whimsical, but something about it stopped her in her tracks. A flying pig represents the impossible becoming possible, defying the world by doing what it says can’t be done.

In that moment, something shifted. Jennifer realized that even in the middle of profound loss and pain, there was still room for purpose. She began to imagine a way to transform her own experience into something that could help others who were walking through similar struggles. If a pig could fly, maybe hope could rise in the most unexpected places too.

She rushed home to share the moment with her boyfriend (who is now her husband), realizing that the small glass pig had come to symbolize something much larger: the belief that even when life changes in unimaginable ways, meaning and hope can still grow.

Years later, when Jennifer founded Chronic Hope Counseling, the symbol of the flying pig naturally followed her. When it came time to create a logo, she turned, as she often does, to her sisters, Karyn and Samantha. Together, they began brainstorming ways to capture that spirit of hope.

A few hours later, with watercolor and postcards spread across the table, her big sister Karyn brought the idea to life. Out of that moment of creativity came the pig we now know and love: Nigel.

Nigel represents the heart of Chronic Hope Counseling. He reminds us that even when life feels impossibly heavy, hope can still take flight. And Penelope, the little glass pig, still sits on Jennifer’s desk today!

We often get asked about our logo: why a flying pig? The answer begins with a story about hope.

In 2014, our founder, Jennifer Sutton’s health began to decline dramatically. Activities that once felt ordinary became incredibly difficult, and she soon found herself spending most of her time in bed. Life began to shrink as pain and illness took up more and more space.
